LADY DIOR 101: SIZE, MATERIALS, HISTORY

Posted on

Christian Dior emerged as a fashion maverick when he had his first show in 1947, defining much of the 1950s with the invention of the famous silhouette that was coined "The New Look". Handbags and accessories have always been a special and crucial element Dior focused on. The late designer believed in the styling prowess of a purse, and the ability of the right purse in defining an outfit.

The beginnings of the Lady Dior

Lady Diana carrying Lady Dior bag

The ChouChou bag, which the Lady Dior was first named, first entered the fashion world in 1999, designed by the then-creative director of Dior, Gianfranco Ferre. Featuring a top handle and a structured, boxy shape, the sleek and elegant ChouChou proved to be the ultimate symbol of femininity and sophistication.
In 1995, the ChouChou was gifted to the beloved Lady Diana. The late Princess of Wales loved the ChouChou so much and was photographed by paparazzi with it so often, that the bag eventually earned the moniker "Lady Dior".
Much like the bag itself, Lady Diana was widely adored in the '90s. Since then, it has remained one of the most desired luxury bags and has been reiterated over the years in different materials and colours – some of which are rare and fetch a premium price in the resale market. Materials used over the years include the classic cannage quilted lambskin, cannage quilted grained calfskin, patent leather, nubuck, and embroidered or studded leather.
Special editions or limited editions of the Lady Dior have come in velvet, crocodile, python, ostrich, lizard, tweed, or embellished in beads or sequins.
